Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone is looking to reinforce his striking options for next season and has targeted two leading Premier League players to do this.
Simeone, who looks likely to stay with Atletico for at least another season, is apparently interested in signing Leicester City talisman Jamie Vardy and Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez.
Apparently, Simeone was impressed by Vardy when the sides clashed in the quarter finals of the Champions League, and believes he would fit into Atletico’s style of play, according to unnamed sources in The Independent. Simeone is also said to be a fan of Sanchez.
However, these plans are dependent on Simeone staying, and Atletico overturning a FIFA transfer ban – the case is going to the Court of Arbitration for Sport – so Arsenal and Leicester fans shouldn’t worry too much yet.
Atletico, who are moving to a new stadium, the Estadio La Peineta, in time for the 2017/18 season, are also said to be eyeing up Alvaro Morata from city rivals Real and Edinson Cavani from Paris St-Germain.
A lot may also depend on the future of Antoine Griezmann. Simeone wants to hold on to his star striker, but there have been many rumours of clubs offering world-record fees for the French striker. Should Griezmann go, then a new striker will become even more of a priority.
