Holiday Memories at Stanfield Nursing Home

This holiday season we focused our care home activities on holiday memories! There were many fun days planned throughout the month centred around the journeys our residents had been on. As a care home providing specialist dementia care services, we are sensitive to the notion that memory decline is the most common symptom of Alzheimer’s. Much research has shown the benefits of dementia patients revisiting old memories and continuing hobbies. We therefore find ways for residents to share their memories and engage in their hobbies as a meaningful way of accessing cognition whilst improving mood.

During the first week of our holiday month residents sat down to watch a programme on holidays in the past. This really raised the spirits of our residents, especially among those who remembered going on similar travels originally. The next day everyone joined together to map out their favourite holiday destinations. This wonderful activity engaged people in conversations about why it was their favourite, bringing smiles to all faces. Our final activity in the first week involved updating our care home memory tree in the main sitting room with a holiday theme. This tree is decorated with our residents’ arts and crafts to celebrate this time of year.

With our approach to person-centred care we make sure that everything we do is in demand from our residents. So for our summer-themed month we arranged an entertaining classic holiday sing-a-longs (a very popular activity at Stanfield Nursing Home). Story-telling is another main activity at our care home that we include in our activities schedule multiple times a month. Its popularity with our residents gave the perfect opportunity for those to share their interesting holiday stories from years ago. The week after, this extended to a general discussion between everyone about family holidays. Topics ranged from their most vivid memories to their fondest ones with a lot of laughter and joy.

Our other care home activities included:

  • Group flower arranging
  • Cake decorating for tea
  • Expressive art with paint
  • Mystery bag game
  • Many musical visits from our regular performers: Reaction Music, Terry, Ray, Les, and more!

Bank Holiday Monday

We often arrange celebratory menus for special days of the month. This month for the bank holiday, residents enjoyed a traditional roast lamb with mint sauce and a vegetable crumble or chicken and mushroom pasta. This was followed by a strawberry and raspberry cheesecake or ice-cream dessert. As always, these meals were prepared and cooked by our on-site chef and her team with locally sourced vegetables and meat.
