Premier League champions Chelsea are planning to launch a bid for Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski, as the club prepare to sell Diego Costa.

Chelsea have been alerted to Polish international Lewandowski’s potential availability after details emerged that he is unsettled at Munich, having recently publicly criticized his team-mates, saying they didn’t do enough to help him become top scorer in the Bundesliga. Although despite this, he did score 30 league goals last season.

Reports in The Mirror say that Chelsea have enquired about Lewandowski, who has scored 264 goals in 430 games in his career. No transfer fee has been mentioned, but Chelsea will be unwilling to pay over the odds for a player who turns 29 later this year.

Chelsea are on the lookout for a striker, with last season’s top marksman Diego Costa expected to leave. Talks have been opened with his former club Atletico Madrid over a move back to the Spanish capital, even though the club is currently under a transfer ban.

Lewandowski is not the only striker on Chelsea’s radar. They are also interested in Real Madrid’s Alvaro Morata and Everton’s Romelu Lukaku. However, they will face stiff competition from other clubs – in the Premier League and abroad – to secure either’s signature.
